Creating a check mark in Adobe Photoshop CS3 will allow you to highlight key elements of a bulleted list, or incorporate a unique shape into your next graphic creation. Traditionally, the check mark is used to mark an item in the affirmative, or to confirm that a statement is true. Creating a custom check mark by altering its color, shape and size will help coordinate the design element with the overall look of your project. Create your check mark by following a few simple steps.
Step 1
Open Adobe Photoshop CS3 and create a new document. On the top navigation menu, click "File," then choose "New" from the drop-down menu.

Create the size of your document by editing the width and height. Type "100" into the field for width and "100" into the field for height to create a 100-by-100 pixel document. Click "OK" to create the new document.

Select the check mark from the custom shape menu. Right click on the shape menu on the left navigation bar and select "Custom Shape Tool." On the top navigation bar, click the drop-down menu beside the shape category. View the list of available shapes in this drop-down menu. Click the drop-down menu to the right side of the shapes and select "Symbols." Select the check mark from the menu of shapes.

Press and hold the shift button as you click and drag the check mark to make it your desired size. Holding the shift button constrains the proportions of the check mark so that it grows and shrinks at equal ratios. Releasing the shift button allows you to create a check mark of varying shapes, making it narrower or wider than a normal check mark.
Step 5
Add color to your check mark. Double click on "Shape 1" under the "Layers" navigation menu to open up the "Layer Style" menu. Select "Color Overlay." Click on the color swatch to the right of the blend mode. Adjust the color wheel until you find a color you like. Choose a color that matches the color pallet of your project.
Step 6
Add a shadow to your check mark. Select "Drop Shadow" from the Layer Style menu. Use the "Opacity" slider to make your shadow lighter or darker.
Step 7
Save your check mark. On the top navigation menu, click "File," then choose "Save As" from the drop-down menu. Name your file "checkmark" and then select your desired format from the "Format" drop-down menu. Choose .png, .jpg, or .gif when saving an image for the web. Choose .psd if you want to alter your check mark later. Click "Save."
