Microsoft Publisher is designed to be a desktop publishing tool to create documents, such as newsletters and brochures. However, as it offers a level of control over the editing and placement of a variety of text, image and objects, it may be used to create other types of documents, such as space or floor plans. While a space plan may not be a pre-formatted design template on Publisher, you may use templates from Office online to create one.

Step 1

Download a space plan template from Microsoft Office at office.microsoft.com. Click the "Templates" tab and choose "Publisher" from the "Products" menu next to the "Search" field. Type "space plan" or "floor plan" into the "Search" field. Click the "Search" icon to display thumbnails of space plan templates.

Step 2

Click the image for the space plan template that you want to download. Click the "Download" link. Click the "Accept" link to proceed by accepting the download terms from Microsoft. Once the space plan has finished downloading, it will open in Publisher.

Step 3

Edit the space plan document as necessary. Images and objects, such as rectangles, circles and lines, may be added by clicking the appropriate shape icon. Click once in the area of the document to which you want to add the shape and drag to the desired size, while holding down the mouse button. Delete the same content by clicking on it once and pressing the "Delete" key on the keyboard. Objects may be moved to different locations within the space plan by clicking once on them and dragging to a new location while holding down the mouse button.
