The umlaut is a set of two dots that appear above a letter. This symbol is used when typing certain languages such as German and in the names of rock groups such as Motörhead. Although the United States keyboard does not have keys for typing letters with umlauts, you can enter them in a message on Facebook or any application that you can compose text in by typing a short code on your keyboard.
Step 1
Push and hold the "Alt" key on the left side of the keyboard after placing the cursor where you want the letter with an umlaut to appear. If you have no numeric keypad on the right side of the keyboard, hold the "Fn" key as well.
