Create a new document. Select the font you want to use from the drop-down list in the "Font" section of the toolbar at the top of the page. Common options include Times New Roman, Arial and Helvetica.

Click the "Center" icon in the "Paragraph" section on the toolbar, if you want to center your letter on the page. In Word 2013, this is the second option in the row of four buttons that show text lines in different positions. This is a good idea if you want to know how to make a banner in word, because it keeps the letters evenly-spaced.

Click the arrow on the "Font Size" box next to the "Font" box on the toolbar. This gives you the option of increasing text size to a maximum of 72 points. This won't be big enough to fit a large letter to a page, so you'll need to key in your own point size. Type "600" into the "Font Size" box to get started and press the "Enter" key on your keyboard.

Type your letter on the page. If the letter is too big or too small, highlight it with your mouse, type a bigger or smaller number into the "Font Size" box and press "Enter" to change it. You can also change font size by using the "Increase" and "Decrease" buttons next to the "Font Size" box, once you've highlighted your letter.

Different Fonts, Different Sizes

Keep in mind that not all fonts are the same size, so you may need to play around to get the right size on the page, depending on the font you're using.

Change the margins on the document if you want to reduce space above, below or at the sides of the letter.

Avoiding Errors While Printing

Sometimes, letters are too big for the page even though they seem to fit. If you print multiple pages at once, this may result in printing blank pages or in uneven line spacing at the top or bottom of pages. You can avoid this by adding a page break before you start each new letter page or by using a text box to control letter size on the page.
