GIMP stands for GNU Image Manipulation Program, and it is a free photo editor that users can download from the Web. It is commonly used as an alternative for those who can't afford Adobe Photoshop because it is just as advanced. Because it is free, it isn't pre-loaded with all the necessary plug-ins needed to remove watermarks. To use GIMP to remove watermarks from an animated GIF file, you will need the Resynthesizer and Smart Remove plug-ins. They are available for free, as well (see Resources).

Load your image into GIMP.

Select the layer that has the watermark. The layers toolbar is on the right side of the screen, and you can select a layer by clicking on it.
Step 3
Select the lasso tool from the toolbar on the right side of the screen and encircle the watermark. It is best to circle a small piece of the watermark at a time. This will ensure you remove it completely without altering other parts of the image.
Step 4
Open the "Filters" menu, highlight "Enhance" and select "Heal Selection."
Step 5
Enter a number in the "Radius to take texture from" box. The default is 50 and should work fine, but if you need a larger or smaller radius, you can change the amount. Play around until you find a radius size that will work well for your watermark removal.
Step 6
Repeat Steps 3, 4 and 5 until your watermark is completely removed. If the watermark appears on multiple frames (layers), repeat this process on each frame until the watermark is removed.
Step 7
Click on "File" and save your image as a ".gif" file.
