How to Reset a Toshiba Laptop Without a CD

You don't need a CD to reset your Toshiba laptop.

It's simple to lose track of the recovery CD that came with your Toshiba laptop, as no one ever thinks they will need it. If you find yourself in a situation where your laptop needs to be completely reset to its original settings, you don't actually need to have the CD in hand. Each Toshiba laptop comes from the factory with a recovery program installed on a secret hard drive partition.

Step 1

Ensure there are no peripheral hardware devices or cables connected to your Toshiba laptop. Unplug any network cables or printers if they are attached to the laptop's ports.

Open the "Start" menu and select "Shut Down" and "Restart." Let the laptop go through its restart procedure until the "Toshiba" logo loads on the LCD screen. Tap "F8" to bring up a new text menu.

Select the text option labeled "Repair Your Computer" and tap "Enter." Select the "Keyboard Layout" option and select "US" or some other configuration for your keyboard settings.

Step 4

Click the "Next" button and enter the user name you have set for your Toshiba laptop in the first text box. Press "Tab" and type your Windows password in the second text box.

Step 5

Select "OK." Click "Toshiba Recovery" in the "Choose a Recovery Tool" menu. Select "Next" to load the Toshiba recovery program.

Step 6

Select "Next." Click "Next" again when the warning screen appears letting you know all your data will be erased by the recovery program. Click "Yes" and select the "Restart" option.

Use the series of drop-down boxes that load on the screen to select your Toshiba's date, time and language options. Click "Next" at each prompt and select "Finish" to load the reset operating system on your Toshiba laptop.
