Many cell phone service providers lock cell phones purchased with them to curtail use by other carriers. Switching from an AT&T locked phone to use Boost mobile service requires that the AT&T phone be unlocked. If your AT&T phone is unlocked, not only can you use it with Boost Mobile, but you can easily change carriers using that same unlocked cell phone. An unlocked cell phone also stops any roaming charges from being placed on the phone.
Step 1
Review your original AT&T contract agreement. Specifically areas involving the use of your cellular telephone with other cell phone service provider. Look for any verbiage on unlocking or unblocking the cell phone that you purchased from AT&T.

Contact AT&T and request that they unlock your phone because your are changing carriers. You can call AT&T at 800-331-0500, search the AT&T website or visit one of their local authorized dealers. If AT&T will not unlock your phone as a courtesy, then ask that they refer you to a company or website that is able to provide the unlock service. AT&T does have instructions for unlock some models on their website.
Step 3
Call Boost Mobile at 866-402-7366 and tell them that you have an AT&T cell phone that you want to convert and use with Boost Mobile. Make sure to tell them which model AT&T phone you currently own. In many cases, Boost Mobile will be able to help you activate your used phone with them.
Step 4
Purchase unlocking software for your AT&T cell phone. This software is unique to your cell phone and can be downloaded directly from your computer to your cell phone using a USB cable. Make sure that you perform due diligence in choosing your software application by checking references and costs. Most cell phone unlocking service providers have a web presence and therefore have reviews of their services readily available online.
Step 5
Hire a reputable cell phone unlocking service provider to unlock your phone in person, online or by providing your with your PUK (PIN Unblock Key) and instructions for its use. These companies are a one-stop shop for those that want their AT&T cell phone unlocked and they do charge a fee for their services.
