If you have a television reception-only (TVRO) satellite receiver, you need to visit the manufacturer website to update a receiver. If you have a satellite receiver from Dish Network or DIRECTV, the satellite receiver updates automatically.

Dish Network and DIRECTV Receiver Updates

Run a network cable from your Internet router to the back of your satellite receiver.

Leave your Internet router turned on at all times. Your satellite receiver will download the updates it needs through the Internet.

Press "Menu" on your satellite TV remote control to set the time you want your satellite receiver to update. Select "Preferences" then "Updates." Use the "Up" and "Down" arrows on your remote control to set the time you want the updates to occur.
Step 4
Plan not to watch satellite TV when it's time for satellite receiver updates. The satellite receiver will reboot after it completes the updating process.
