DirecTV remotes come in three wireless modes. The infrared, or IR, remote is a line-of-sight device that must "see" the DirecTV receiver to function. The second is the Radio Frequency, or RF, remote that can function behind walls and around corners. The third is the combined Infrared/Radio Frequency, or IR/RF, remote, which provides the best of both worlds because the user can configure this remote to switch back and forth between the IR and RF transmitter modes.
Step 1
Change the remote's transmitter from IR to RF, starting with writing down the last six digits of the DirecTV receiver ID (RID), which you'll find on the back of the receiver or inside its CAM access door beside the reset button.
