Panasonic televisions that are not equipped with headphone jacks can still be hooked up for private listening. The trick is to use the "Audio Output" jacks on the back of the set. A standard set of RCA-type audio cables and a "Y-adapter" are the only materials needed for the connection. Choosing the right type of Y-adapter depends on the headphones that will be used. A set of headphones with a standard RCA plug on the end of the cord will need a Y-adapter with a standard RCA jack. Headphones equipped with a 1/8-inch mini-plug (3 1/2 millimeters), such as used for personal audio devices like an iPod or MP3 player, will need a Y-adapter with RCA jacks on one end and a mini-plug jack on the other.
Step 1
Check the Panasonic TV cabinet on the front and back panels to determine if the model is equipped with a dedicated headphone jack. If not, go to Step 2.

Step 2
Look at the headphone plug on the end of the cable. It will be one of two types, either a standard RCA plug or a 1/8-inch mini-plug. The Y-adapter will need a jack to fit either the standard RCA plug or the smaller mini-plug jack, with standard RCA plugs on the other end of the adapter.
Step 3
Connect the two RCA plugs on the Y-adapter to the Audio Out jacks on the back of the Panasonic television.
Step 4
Plug the headphones into the remaining Y-adapter jack.
Step 5
Turn on the Panasonic TV and use the remote control to access the main menu by pressing the "Menu" key.
Step 6
Use the up and down arrow keys to move through the menu choices until "Speakers" appears on the TV screen.
Step 7
Use the right and left arrow keys to turn the Panasonic TV's built-in speakers on or off. This will shut off the built-in speakers so the user can enjoy private listening with headphones.
