InDesign offers an abundant set of design, formatting and layout tools. Knowing how to make labels with this program will enable you to create presentation-quality content for envelopes and other media. You can create labels with InDesign by first running the Text tool and configuring that tool's typeface and size parameters. Then, you use Text to create text boxes, one for each column on your label, and you align the boxes with the Selection tool. The procedure is straightforward and you will be making high-quality labels in a matter of minutes.
Step 1
Click "File," select "New" and then click "Document" to display the dialog box that allows you to specify the size and other parameters for a new document. Type the desired label width in the "Width" text box, and be sure to specify the units. For example, if you want the label to be five inches wide, you would type the following: 5"

Step 2
Type the label's height in the "Height" text box, and then click "OK" to create the document for the label. Press "T" to run the Text tool. Click the arrow to the right of the Font control, above the left corner of the document. This action displays a list of fonts. Click the font you want to use for the label.
Step 3
Type the desired point size for the label's text in the Font Size control, immediately to the right of the Font control. For example, if you want 12-point text, type "12 pt" (without the quotes) in the Font Size control.
Step 4
Move your mouse pointer to a location slightly to the right of the left edge of the canvas and slightly below the top edge. Click and hold the left mouse button, then drag down until the bottom edge of the text box is slightly above the document's bottom edge and the right edge is where you want the first column of the label to end. If you want only one column for your label, drag the text box right until its right edge is slightly to the left of the document's right edge. These instructions create a four-sided margin between the text box and the document. This margin prevents the text on the label from being cut off when it's printed.
Step 5
Create the label's remaining columns as you did the first, then press "V" to run the Selection tool. Drag upward on a square handle of the text box. InDesign will display a line when the top of the text box aligns with the top of an existing text box. Release the mouse when you see this line. Align the bottom of the new text box the same way.
Step 6
Press "T" to run the text tool again and click in the text box for the leftmost column in your document. Type the text you want to appear in the column. Enter the text for the label's remaining columns to complete the label.
